What is text-to-speech?
Text-to-speech (TTS) is a type of assistive technology that reads digital text aloud. It's also now available in some stories on Wattpad! Using text-to-speech technology, we have made these stories available in audio so more people can enjoy their favorite story however they please. This started as a time-limited test and is now being expanded; it is subject to change as we learn more about how text-to-speech can serve Wattpaders. At the moment, this feature is only available for stories written in English.
What is the purpose of this?
For those with visual impairment or difficulty reading, text-to-speech can be a useful tool for accessing the story. It can also make it easier to enjoy stories at your own convenience, especially if you can’t give your full attention to a screen.
What stories are part of this?
You can find all stories with text-to-speech by searching the #texttospeech tag. We aim to include text-to-speech in all stories written in English over the coming months. You can tell if it’s available by loading the story and looking for the audio player at the top of each chapter.
How can I use it?
1. Begin reading a story that has the tag #texttospeech.
2. At the top of the page, you will see a control panel.
3. Select the Play button to begin. You can use the two icons at the top right corners to jump back or forward ten seconds. If you select the X1.0 button, you can increase or decrease the speed of the voice.
How can I get text-to-speech added to my story?
Stories written in English with at least 10,000 words will have text-to-speech automatically added to them in the coming months. Previously, you could request to have the feature added or removed from your story, but as we are now rolling this feature out more widely, the upload will happen automatically if the above criteria are met.
Can I still sell the audio rights to my story if text-to-speech is on my story?
Yes! This is an automated reading of your story. It uses text-to-speech technology to create an audio version of your work. It's similar to a screen reader or other assistive technology that most smartphones and web browsers support. Because this is not an audiobook, but rather an accessibility feature, you are still free to create an audiobook and sell that separately or work with a publisher to do so.
Can I change the voice, pronunciation, or any part of the audio?
We do not have support for customizations at this time.
